Back to School Prep

As the summer days quickly draw to a close and the back-to-school season approaches, we at Cultura Wellness Therapy want to extend our support to all parents, guardians, and caregivers. This transitional time can be both exciting and overwhelming for families, so to support you and your children during this period of change, we are dedicating this newsletter to tips on easing into the new school year, insight on how to focus on your child’s mental health, and emphasizing the importance of being kind to both yourself and your little ones.

Fostering a Positive Transition

  • Communication: Encourage open dialogue with your children about their feelings and emotions regarding the upcoming school year. Create a safe space where they can express their hopes and concerns. Active listening can help them feel heard and understood, easing their anxieties.

  • Routine and Preparation: Help your kids ease into the school routine by gradually adjusting their sleep schedules and getting them involved in preparing for the new academic year. Use technology to your benefit and make bedtime or wake-up time fun by utilizing an Alexa to announce when it’s time to get ready for bed or start the day. Let them choose their school supplies and outfits, fostering a sense of ownership and excitement.

  • Self-Kindness: As the pace of life quickens with the school routine, it's crucial to remember to be gentle with yourself and your children. Allow yourself moments of self-care, whether it's a short meditation, a walk in nature, or a hobby that brings you joy. Remember that you are doing your best, and the first few weeks of the school year may be tough. It's okay to seek support when needed.

Children's Mental Health Matters

During this back-to-school period, it's essential to think about and prioritize your child's mental health. Some key points to keep in mind:

  • Normalize Emotions: Let your children know that experiencing a range of emotions is normal, and it's okay to feel anxious or uncertain about new experiences.

  • Stay Connected: Maintain open lines of communication and check in with your kids regularly to see how they are coping with the changes.

  • Encourage Activities They Love: Engaging in activities they enjoy can boost their mood and provide a sense of accomplishment.

  • Be Mindful of Signs: Watch out for any significant changes in behavior or mood, as these could be signs of distress. Don't hesitate to seek professional support if needed.

Remember, as we embrace this transitional time, being kind to ourselves and our children lays the foundation for a successful and positive journey ahead.

Wishing you all a smooth back-to-school experience filled with love and understanding.

Try the Candle Method

The Candle Method is a powerful visualization technique that children can use to manage stress and anxiety. Try this with your kids (or even by yourself) during this transitional time when emotions are high:

  • Find a Quiet Space: Have your child sit comfortably in a quiet, safe space, free from distractions.

  • Close Their Eyes: Encourage them to close their eyes and take a few deep breaths to relax.

  • Visualize a Candle: Ask them to imagine a beautiful, flickering candle in their mind. This candle represents their inner strength and resilience.

  • Breathing with the Flame: Instruct your child to take slow, deep breaths while imagining the candle's flame growing brighter with each inhale and dimmer with each exhale.

  • Blowing Out Worries: If they feel overwhelmed or anxious, tell them to visualize their worries as tiny clouds surrounding the candle. With a deep breath, have them blow out these clouds, watching them dissipate into the air.

  • Basking in Inner Strength: Encourage them to focus on the radiant glow of the candle and feel the warmth it provides. Remind them that they can access this inner strength whenever they need it.
